Illustration for Pae Ora (Healthy Futures) Act 2022

The Minister must set up a group called the expert advisory committee on public health. You will see this group giving advice to the Minister, the Public Health Agency, and Health New Zealand about public health issues. The Minister decides who is on the committee after talking to the Hauora Māori Advisory Committee. The committee gives advice on things like what affects people's health and how to promote public health. The Minister must choose committee members who know about population health, health equity, and te Tiriti o Waitangi. Each member of the committee is appointed on certain terms and conditions decided by the Minister. The Minister can change who is on the committee and what they do, as seen in the amendment made by section 37 of the Pae Ora (Disestablishment of Māori Health Authority) Amendment Act 2024. The committee can decide how it wants to work, as long as it follows any directions from the Minister. The Minister must make sure the committee has the right skills and knowledge to give good advice.
