Illustration for Local Government (Auckland Council) Act 2009

The number of members for each local board is decided by the Local Government Commission under section 34(1)(c). You can think of the Local Government Commission as a group that helps make decisions about local governments. The number of members for each local board can be changed, but it must always be between 5 and 12 members.

This change can happen in two ways: as a result of a review by the Council under the Local Electoral Act 2001, or as part of a local government reorganisation under the Local Government Act 2002.

When you become a member of a local board, you must be elected in accordance with this Act and the Local Electoral Act 2001. You will also need to elect a chairperson from among yourselves using one of the systems of voting set out in clause 25(3) and (4) of Schedule 7 of the Local Government Act 2002.
