The governing body of Auckland Transport is called the board of directors. You can think of the board of directors as a group of people who make decisions for Auckland Transport. This group has between 6 and 8 voting directors, and some of these directors can also be members of the Auckland Council.

The board of directors also includes one non-voting director who is chosen by the New Zealand Transport Agency. The Auckland Council appoints all the members of the board, including the chairperson and deputy chairperson, but they cannot appoint one of their own members as the chairperson or deputy chairperson.

If the non-voting director is absent or no longer holds their position, someone from the New Zealand Transport Agency can take their place until a new director is appointed. If there are empty seats on the board, it does not affect the work that Auckland Transport does.
