Local Government (Auckland Council) Act 2009

Board promoting issues of significance for mana whenua groups and mataawaka of Tamaki Makaurau

82: Board independent

You could also call this:

"The board makes its own decisions without being told what to do by others."

Illustration for Local Government (Auckland Council) Act 2009

The board is a separate group from the Auckland Council, its own members, the group that selects its members, and the mana whenua groups that are part of the selection group. You can think of the board as its own entity. The board is also independent, meaning it does not have to follow directions from the Auckland Council or the mana whenua groups.

The board does not have to listen to anyone telling it what to do. When the board members are making decisions, they must think about what is best for the board's purpose. They cannot think about their own interests or what others want them to do.

The board's members have to act in a way that helps the board achieve its goals, and they must not act in any other way that might interfere with this.
