Te Ture Whaimana is a document that guides what happens to the Waikato and Waipā Rivers. You can find more information about this in the legislation referred to in subsection (3). Te Ture Whaimana is the main direction for activities that affect these rivers.

Te Ture Whaimana is more important than any other rules that might contradict it, such as national policy statements or planning standards. It is also considered part of the Waikato regional policy statement, which means any regional or district plans that affect the Waikato or Waipā Rivers must follow Te Ture Whaimana.

Te Ture Whaimana refers to the vision and strategy set out in Schedule 2 of the Waikato-Tainui Raupatu Claims (Waikato River) Settlement Act 2010, Schedule 1 of the Ngati Tuwharetoa, Raukawa, and Te Arawa River Iwi Waikato River Act 2010, and Schedule 1 of the Nga Wai o Maniapoto (Waipa River) Act 2012.
