Wildlife Act 1953

Protection of wildlife

7B: Terrestrial and freshwater invertebrates

You could also call this:

"Rules about animals without backbones on land and in freshwater"

The law says some invertebrates on land and in freshwater are animals. You can find a list of these animals in Schedule 7. The Governor-General can change this list by adding or removing invertebrates. You can see the rules for publishing these changes in Part 3 of the Legislation Act 2019.

The Governor-General can decide if these changes apply to the whole of New Zealand or just some parts. They can also choose how long these changes last. When the Governor-General makes these changes, it is called secondary legislation. You can learn more about what this means by reading Part 3 of the Legislation Act 2019.
