You vote using the Single Transferable Voting system for local elections. You choose a first favourite candidate and can also choose second and further favourites. The system calculates a quota to decide who gets elected. You get to vote for one candidate as your first choice and can vote for other candidates as your second or further choices. The system works out how many votes a candidate needs to get elected. If a candidate gets enough first choice votes, they get elected. If not enough candidates get elected, the system looks at the votes again. It takes the extra votes from the elected candidates and gives them to the other candidates you chose. The candidate with the fewest votes is then excluded and their votes are given to your other chosen candidates. This process keeps happening until all the positions are filled. The system works a bit differently for mayoral or single member elections. You still choose a first favourite candidate and can choose second and further favourites. The system works out how many votes a candidate needs to get elected. If a candidate gets more than half of the votes, they get elected. If not, the candidate with the fewest votes is excluded and their votes are given to your other chosen candidates. This process keeps happening until a candidate is elected. The same process is used for polls, but instead of voting for candidates, you vote on a particular issue.
