Illustration for Local Electoral Act 2001

You commit the offence of bribery if you give money or something valuable to someone to influence their vote. You also commit bribery if you offer someone a job or a position to influence their vote. If you do any of these things, you can be punished. You can also commit bribery if you receive money or something valuable for voting or not voting. This includes getting something after you have voted. If you are found guilty, you can be imprisoned for up to 2 years. If you pay money to someone to use for bribery, you are also committing an offence. This includes paying back money that was used for bribery. The law is clear: bribery is not allowed in elections.
