You live in a region that must be divided into areas called constituencies for election purposes. The people in each constituency elect the members of the regional council. Each constituency must elect at least one member of the regional council. You elect the members of the regional council who represent your constituency. The members of the regional council cannot be elected in a way that is partly by the people in the whole region and partly by the people in each constituency. The regional council members are elected by the people in their own constituency. The rules for electing regional council members are found in the Local Electoral Act and other related laws, such as the Local Electoral Amendment Act 2002. You can find more information about these laws on the legislation.govt.nz website. The laws about electing regional council members have been updated over time, including changes made on 25 December 2002.
