24B: Voting rights at triennial general election of territorial authority

"Voting in Local Elections if You're in a Māori Ward"

Illustration for Local Electoral Act 2001

You can vote in a triennial general election if you are an elector of a Māori ward of a territorial authority. You are entitled to vote for the mayor, the member who will represent your Māori ward, and the member who will represent the whole district. You can also vote for the member of your local board or community board if you have one. You cannot vote for a member who will represent another ward of the territorial authority. Only people who are electors of a Māori ward can vote for the member who will represent that ward. This means that you will have a say in who represents your area, but not in who represents other areas.
