Illustration for Local Electoral Act 2001

When you run for a local election, you can only spend a certain amount of money. This amount depends on how many people live in the area you want to represent. For example, if the area has less than 5,000 people, you can spend up to $3,500. If the area has between 5,000 and 9,999 people, you can spend up to $7,000. The amount you can spend goes up as the population of the area increases. You can spend up to $100,000 plus a certain amount for each elector if the area has 1,000,000 or more people, as prescribed under section 139(1)(ha). If you are running for more than one election at the same time, you can only spend the highest amount allowed for any one of those elections. You must include goods and services tax in the total amount you spend. This rule helps keep election spending fair and under control.
