Electricity Industry Act 2010

Electricity industry governance - Who does what - Industry participants and specified persons

7: Industry participants

You could also call this:

“This law explains who counts as part of the electricity industry”

This law explains who is considered an ‘industry participant’ in the electricity industry. You are an industry participant if you are:

A generator who makes electricity, Transpower (the company that manages the national grid), a distributor who delivers electricity to homes and businesses, or a retailer who sells electricity to customers.

You are also an industry participant if you own power lines, use electricity directly from the national grid, or generate electricity that goes into a network (even if you’re not a big generator).

If you buy electricity from the clearing manager or if you’re named in specific regulations, you’re also an industry participant.

The law also lists some service providers as industry participants. These include people who operate the market, provide or own metering equipment, offer ancillary services, run approved test houses, aggregate loads, trade electricity, or any other service provider named in regulations.

It’s important to know that the Authority (which oversees the electricity industry) is not usually considered an industry participant. They only count as one when they’re doing the job of a service provider.
