Electricity Industry Act 2010

Electricity industry governance - Monitoring and enforcement - Authority's powers and procedures

45: Purposes of exercise of Authority's monitoring, investigation, enforcement, and review powers

You could also call this:

“Why the Electricity Authority checks and enforces rules in the electricity industry”

The Electricity Authority has powers to monitor, investigate, enforce, and review certain aspects of the electricity industry. These powers can be used for three main purposes:

  1. To monitor things. This includes checking if people are following the rules in the Electricity Industry Act, the regulations, and the Electricity Code. It also involves watching how well certain measures are working to help the market run smoothly. The Authority also keeps an eye on the industry and market in general.

  2. To investigate and enforce the rules. If someone might be breaking the rules in Parts 2 and 4 of the Act, or the regulations, or the Electricity Code, the Authority can look into it. They can also make sure people follow these rules.

  3. To review and report. If the Minister asks the Authority to look into something and write a report about it, the Authority can use its powers to do this.

These powers help the Authority do its job of making sure the electricity industry in New Zealand works well and follows the rules.
