“Explaining what some important words mean in the electricity law”

This section changes how the law defines some important terms in the Electricity Act 1992.

The definition of ‘electrical installation’ has been updated. Now, it means the parts of an electrical system on a property that carry electricity from the point where it enters (called the point of supply) to where it’s used, or parts that generate or store electricity. For properties without a point of supply, it includes all the parts that carry, generate, or store electricity.

However, the definition doesn’t include electrical appliances. It also doesn’t include equipment owned by electricity generators that’s used to make electricity or send it to distribution or transmission lines. Lastly, it doesn’t include equipment used to change, transform, or move electricity through distribution or transmission lines.

The definition of ‘works’ has also been changed. It now specifically doesn’t include any part of an electrical installation.

These changes help to make clear what parts of an electrical system are considered an ‘electrical installation’ and what’s considered ‘works’ under the law. This is important because different rules might apply to different parts of the electrical system.
