Electricity Industry Act 2010

Electricity industry governance - Who does what - Electricity Authority

17: Statements of government policy

You could also call this:

“The government tells the Electricity Authority how to manage electricity”

The Electricity Authority must follow what the government says about electricity when it does its job. The Minister in charge of electricity tells the Authority what the government wants by writing it down.

Before the Minister can tell the Authority what to do, they have to talk to the Authority first. This is to make sure everyone understands what’s happening.

When the government decides something about electricity, they have to do four things:

  1. Write it down and give it to the Authority
  2. Put it in a special book called the Gazette
  3. Show it to the people who make laws in Parliament
  4. Make sure everyone can see it

These government decisions about electricity start working on the day it says in the Gazette. The government can change these decisions or make new ones in the same way they made the first one.
