The Registrar-General can share some personal information with authorities in other countries. You might be wondering what kind of information this is - it can include details about a name change or a death. The Registrar-General can share this information if you were born in the country where the overseas authority is in charge. The Registrar-General might decide not to share name-change information if you can show that there are special reasons why it should not be shared. These special reasons could be about your personal situation and might be related to your safety or wellbeing. You would need to explain these reasons to the Registrar-General. The Registrar-General can also get information from overseas authorities about name changes or deaths. This can happen if you were born in New Zealand or if you are a New Zealand citizen. The Registrar-General can share information about marriages or civil unions that have ended with overseas authorities if the marriage or civil union was registered in the country where the authority is in charge. The Registrar-General can get information from overseas authorities about divorces or the end of marriages or civil unions. This can happen if the marriage or civil union was registered in New Zealand.
