If you are given a unique identifier, there are rules about how it can be used. These rules are called Information Privacy Principles, or IPP for short. IPP 13 has parts that do not apply to unique identifiers given out before 1 July 1993.

If you are given a unique identifier on or after 1 July 1993, some rules still apply. This is true even if you were given the same identifier by another agency before 1 July 1993. You can find more information about this by looking at the Privacy Act 2020 and previous laws like the one mentioned in s 8(5), (6).
