The purpose of this Act is to replace the Land Transfer Act 1952 with a modern Act. You will find the old Act at https://legislation.govt.nz/act/public/1986/0120/latest/link.aspx?id=DLM269031. This new Act continues the Torrens system of land title in New Zealand and retains its fundamental principles. The Torrens system provides security of ownership of land and facilitates the transfer of land. It also provides compensation for loss and a register of land that describes ownership. This new Act reflects that land transfer records are now kept electronically. The new Act maintains the integrity of land title by keeping electronic records and allowing electronic dealings. This helps keep the system secure and up to date. You can trust that your land ownership is protected under this new Act.
