Illustration for Land Transfer Act 2017

When you are named with others in a document as owners of land, you are treated as joint tenants. This means you own the land together. You can find more information about Māori land in section 4 of Te Ture Whenua Maori Act 1993, but this rule does not apply to that type of land. If the document says something different, that is what counts. This rule does not apply to Māori land as defined in the Act.
