Illustration for Planning Bill

You will hear the term 'rule' in the Planning Bill. A rule is a part of a key instrument that does certain things. It can classify activities as permitted, restricted, or prohibited. You can think of a rule as something that sets conditions for activities. It can say what you need to do to carry out a permitted activity, or what conditions you must meet. A rule can also say what information you need to include in an application for a planning consent. A rule can be part of a land use plan too. It can modify requirements for esplanade reserves or say when future provisions apply, as outlined in sections like section 84 and section 94(a). This helps clarify what a rule is in the context of the Planning Bill.
