When you are talking about supervision under the Sentencing Act 2002, a programme can mean different things. It can be psychiatric or other counselling, or an assessment that is not residential. You can also attend medical, psychological, or social programmes.

A programme can be about education, employment, or rehabilitation, and it is not residential. You might be placed in the care of a person, people, or an agency that the Department of Corrections approves. This can include being cared for by your iwi, hapu, or whanau, or a marae, ethnic or cultural group, or a religious group.

The Department of Corrections chief executive must approve the person or group that cares for you, as stated in section 50. You will be part of a programme that helps you, and it is not a residential programme. The programme is designed to help you in different ways.
