When you bring goods into or out of New Zealand, you need to follow the rules. This section is about goods that are not allowed into New Zealand unless you have a special licence, permit, or consent. You can get a licence, permit, or consent to bring in some prohibited goods.

The person in charge of Customs can stop your goods from being brought into New Zealand until they are satisfied you have the right licence, permit, or consent. They can refuse to let your goods pass through Customs, or not let them be exported. They can also stop your goods from being moved from a special area controlled by Customs, until they check your licence, permit, or consent. You can find more information about this rule by looking at the Customs and Excise Act 1986.
