When you think of New Zealand, you might think of the land and the sea that is right next to it. The law says that New Zealand includes this area of sea, called the contiguous zone, for some specific rules. These rules are in sections like section 191, section 194, and section 195.

Some other rules also apply in the contiguous zone, just like they do in New Zealand. These rules are in sections like section 192, section 206, and section 214. You can find more of these rules in sections section 226 to section 263.

If someone uses a power given by this law in the contiguous zone, they must follow article 33 of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.
