Illustration for Customs and Excise Act 2018

When you arrive in New Zealand, you must give Customs the information they need. This information is decided by the chief executive's rules. You have to give this information in the way the chief executive's rules say.

You must provide the information by the time the chief executive's rules say. This time might be before you even arrive in New Zealand. If that's the case, you will be following the rules if you give the information in the right way and by the right time.

There might be some exceptions to this rule, which can be decided by regulations. These regulations can say that some people do not have to give this information when they arrive in New Zealand. You can find more information about the rules that were changed to include this provision in the Customs and Excise (Arrival Information) Amendment Act 2023.
