Intelligence and Security Act 2017

Oversight of intelligence and security agencies - Intelligence and Security Committee - Continuation of Intelligence and Security Committee

198: Chairperson of Committee

You could also call this:

"The person in charge of the Intelligence and Security Committee meetings"

Illustration for Intelligence and Security Act 2017

The Committee has a chairperson who is in charge of the meetings. You can think of the chairperson like the person who makes sure everyone follows the rules and has a turn to talk. The chairperson is usually the Prime Minister, but sometimes it can be another member of the Committee who the Prime Minister chooses.

When the Committee is talking about how well an intelligence and security agency is doing its job, and the Prime Minister is in charge of that agency, then the Prime Minister cannot be the chairperson of that meeting. Instead, the Prime Minister must choose someone else to be in charge of the meeting, and this person must be someone who is not in charge of the agency being discussed.

The chairperson can choose someone else to be in charge if they are not at a meeting. This person can be the Deputy Prime Minister or the Attorney-General, even if they are not already a member of the Committee.
