Illustration for Intelligence and Security Act 2017

The Director-General of an intelligence and security agency must keep a record of all directions they give to businesses. You can think of this record as a list that includes important details about each direction, such as why it was given, who it was given to, and what the agency was trying to achieve. The Director-General must also note when the business followed the direction.

The record must have information about the direction, including the date it was given and the type of records the agency wanted to get from the business. This helps the agency keep track of what it has asked businesses to do and what it has received in response. The agency is also keeping track of the reasons why it gave the direction and what it was trying to do.

Certain people, like the Minister responsible for the agency and the Inspector-General, can look at the record at any time to see what directions have been given and what has happened as a result.
