Illustration for Intelligence and Security Act 2017

The Director-General of an intelligence and security agency can ask for help to carry out an authorisation from the New Zealand Police, another organisation, or a person. You need to know that the Director-General must say what help is needed and write it down. The person who helps is controlled by the Director-General and can do the same things as the intelligence and security agency.

When you assist, you have the same protections as an employee of an intelligence and security agency, as stated in section 104 of the Public Service Act 2020 and section 111 of this Act. This means you are treated the same way as someone who works for the agency.

In this context, an organisation can be a company, a group of people, a government department, or a Crown entity, which is an organisation that works for the government.
