If you are the Director-General of an intelligence and security agency, you can apply for approval to get business records from business agencies. You must make this application in writing to the responsible Minister and the Chief Commissioner of Intelligence Warrants. Your application must explain why you need the business records and what records you want to get.

You need to tell them what business records you want and the time period they cover. You also need to say which function you are performing under section 10, 11, or 14 that requires you to get these records. You must explain why it is impractical to apply for an intelligence warrant to get the records or why it would not be appropriate.

You have to give all this information when you apply for approval to get the business records. This is so the Minister and the Chief Commissioner can decide whether to approve your application. They need to know why you need the records and what you will use them for.
