Health Act 1956

Management of infectious diseases - Contact tracing

92ZZA: Who may be contact tracer

You could also call this:

"Who can help track people who have been near someone with an infectious disease?"

When it comes to tracing contacts of someone with an infectious disease, you can be a contact tracer if you are a medical officer of health or a health protection officer. You can also be a contact tracer if you are a person who is suitably qualified in health or community work and you have been nominated by Health New Zealand or a medical officer of health. This means you might be able to help track down people who have been in close contact with someone who has an infectious disease. You don't have to follow the rules in this part of the law to do contact tracing, it's just one way to do it. If you want to know more about the law, you can check the Health (Protection) Amendment Act 2016 or the Pae Ora (Healthy Futures) Act 2022 for more information.
