The Governor-General appoints a Clerk of the House of Representatives. You find out who gets this job when the Speaker recommends someone. The Speaker must talk to the leaders of parties in the House of Representatives before making a recommendation. They can also talk to other members if they think it's a good idea. This rule does not apply after a general election. You can compare this to the 1986 legislation for more information.
