Illustration for Parliament Bill

The Speaker will decide what travel and accommodation expenses to pay for when you are part of official inter-parliamentary relations or political exchange programmes. You might be going to these programmes as a member of Parliament, or as a spouse or partner of a member, or as an employee of the Parliamentary Service. The Speaker will also decide what expenses to pay for when you are doing approved professional development as part of these programmes. The Speaker must make these decisions in a way that helps all members travel for these programmes, no matter what their individual needs are. When the Speaker talks about approved professional development, they mean development that they have agreed is related to your professional growth and is suitable for your participation in the inter-parliamentary relations programme. If the Speaker makes a decision about these expenses, it is considered secondary legislation, which has its own publication requirements as outlined in Part 3 of the Legislation Act 2019. You can find more information about what this means by looking at the Legislation Act 2019.
