Purposes and interpretation

60Purposes of this Part and Schedule 3

  1. The primary purpose of this Part and Schedule 3 is to ensure that members are properly supported to perform their roles and functions in a way that maintains confidence in the integrity of Parliament.

  2. This Part and Schedule 3 achieve that purpose by—

  3. providing for the salaries and allowances of members:
    1. providing an efficient and effective system for determining the following matters:
      1. what services must be provided to members and eligible candidates to enable them to carry out their work:
        1. how the expenses that members and eligible candidates incur in carrying out their work are met from public money.
        2. This Part and Schedule 3 have the additional purposes of—

        3. determining travel expenses to be paid for the benefit of family members of members and eligible candidates; and
          1. determining an annuity to be paid to a person who has held the office of Prime Minister for a total of at least 2 years; and
            1. determining travel expenses that may be paid to a person who has held the office of Prime Minister and that person’s spouse or partner; and
              1. providing for a rebate of costs for travel to be paid to former members in office before the 1999 general election and, if applicable, their spouses or partners.
