This page is about a bill. That means that it's not the law yet, but some people want it to be the law. It could change quickly, and some of the information is just a draft.

Illustration for Parliament Bill

The Parliament Bill proposes a change to the law. You will see a new rule about travel expenses for former Prime Ministers. The Remuneration Authority will decide if former Prime Ministers and their spouses or partners can get travel expenses paid for by the government. They will get these expenses if the Authority says they can. If the Authority says they can get travel expenses, the government will pay them. This includes spouses or partners of former Prime Ministers, even if the former Prime Minister has died. The spouse or partner will keep getting expenses, even if they remarry or re-partner, until they die. The Remuneration Authority's decision will be a type of law, and you can find out more about how these laws are published in Part 3 of the Legislation Act 2019. You can look at the Legislation Act 2019 to learn more about this. This proposed change is part of the Parliament Bill, which is a bill to change the law.
