This page is about a bill. That means that it's not the law yet, but some people want it to be the law. It could change quickly, and some of the information is just a draft.

Illustration for Parliament Bill

This proposed law change applies after a general election in New Zealand. When you read this Act, a reference to the Speaker means the person who was the Speaker before the election. A reference to the Deputy Speaker means the person who was the Deputy Speaker before the election. You also need to know that a reference to a member with authority to act as Speaker means a person who could act as Speaker before the election, as explained in section 48(3). However, this rule about the Speaker does not apply to some specific sections, such as section 102, section 110, section 126, and section 131. These sections are about appointing certain officials, and the rule about the Speaker does not apply to them, as well as to some clauses in Schedule 4, such as clause 5, clause 11, and clause 12.
