This page is about a bill. That means that it's not the law yet, but some people want it to be the law. It could change quickly, and some of the information is just a draft.

Parliament Bill

Speaker, Deputy Speaker, and parliamentary precincts - Speaker and Deputy Speaker - Speaker and Deputy Speaker at dissolution of Parliament and from polling day

49: Deputy Speaker to continue in office despite dissolution or expiration of Parliament

You could also call this:

"The Deputy Speaker keeps their job even when Parliament ends."

Illustration for Parliament Bill

If you are the Deputy Speaker when Parliament ends, you keep your job. You stay in office until the next general election polling day closes. You can leave your job as Deputy Speaker before then if you want to. You can look at section 13 of the Constitution Act 1986 to see a similar rule for the Speaker. This means you get to keep working as Deputy Speaker for a bit longer, even after Parliament ends.
