The Remuneration Authority decides how much money members of Parliament get paid. They do this by following the rules in the Remuneration Authority Act 1977. You might get paid differently depending on the job you do in Parliament, the area you represent, or other things the Remuneration Authority thinks are important. The Remuneration Authority checks if any other decisions might benefit members of Parliament or their families before making their own decision. If a decision might benefit them, the Remuneration Authority takes this into account when deciding how much to pay them and explains how they did this in their decision. Their decision is a type of law, and you can find out more about how these laws are published in Part 3 of the Legislation Act 2019.

71Remuneration Authority to determine salaries and allowances

  1. The Remuneration Authority must determine the salaries and allowances to be paid to members in accordance with the Remuneration Authority Act 1977.

  2. The salaries and allowances may differ according to—

  3. the parliamentary or ministerial office that a member holds; or
    1. the electorate that a member represents; or
      1. any other considerations that the Remuneration Authority may determine.
        1. Before making a determination under this section, the Remuneration Authority must ascertain whether any determination made under section 72, 85, 87, or 94 was assessed by its maker as resulting in a personal benefit or potential personal benefit for members, Ministers, or their family members.

        2. If a determination was assessed as resulting in such a benefit, the Remuneration Authority must—

        3. take the assessed value into account in determining the salaries and allowances of the relevant members or Ministers; and
          1. include in its determination a statement explaining how it has taken the assessed value into account.
            1. A determination under this section is secondary legislation (see Part 3 of the Legislation Act 2019 for publication requirements).
