Local Government Act 1974

Roads (other than regional roads), service lanes, and access ways - Formation, alteration, stopping, and closing of roads

342: Stopping and closing of roads

You could also call this:

"Councils can temporarily close roads to some or all traffic, and may charge a fee to use them."

Illustration for Local Government Act 1974

The council can stop any road or part of a road in your area. They can do this in the way set out in the Schedule 10. They can also close a road to traffic, or to a specific type of traffic, for a short time.

The council can close a road to pedestrians or to cars, for example, as long as they follow the rules in Schedule 10. When they close a road, they can charge people to use it, as set out in Schedule 10. This means you might have to pay to use the road.
