Local Government Act 1974

Roads (other than regional roads), service lanes, and access ways - Private roads and private ways

347: Grades and formation of private roads

"Rules for building and looking after private roads"

When it comes to private roads, you need to follow some rules. The rules about the grades and formation of roads, and building lines, apply to private roads just like they do to other roads that the council controls. This is subject to the Resource Management Act 1991, which means that act's rules also apply.

The council's rules about roads are used for private roads. You can find more information about these rules in the laws that govern how councils work.

These rules help make sure private roads are safe and well-made, just like other roads.
