Illustration for Local Government Act 1974

If you are a council in charge of a ferry, you can rent it out to someone else for up to 14 years. You get to decide how much rent to charge and what rules the person renting the ferry must follow to keep it in good condition. You do not have to auction or tender the lease to the public. If you want to rent the ferry out for more than 3 years, you must tell the public about the proposed terms and conditions at least 2 months before you make the deal. You can find more information about this rule in section 2 of the Local Government Amendment Act 1978.
