When a permit expires, you must tell the Registrar-General of Land if the permit was granted before 21 August 2003 and was not for petroleum. You have to do this if you are the permit holder. The permit holder is responsible for giving this notice.

If your permit is for Māori land, you must tell the Registrar of the Māori Land Court when it expires. This rule applies to permits granted before 21 August 2003 that are not for petroleum, and to permits granted on or after 21 August 2003. You must give this notice as the permit holder.

If you do not give the required notice within a reasonable time, the chief executive may give the notice instead, as stated in the Crown Minerals Amendment Act 2025.
