Public Works Act 1981

Railways and tramways regulation and inspection - Local railways and tramways

181: Notice to Minister of accidents

You could also call this:

“Telling the government about big railway accidents”

If you are in charge of a local railway, you need to tell the Minister about serious accidents. If someone gets badly hurt or if there’s big damage to the railway, you must let the Minister know within 48 hours. You can do this by sending a telegram or making a phone call.

It’s really important that you do this. If you don’t tell the Minister on purpose, you’re breaking the law. You could get in trouble and have to pay up to $100 as a fine.

This rule is there to make sure that the people in charge know about any big problems on the railways quickly. It helps keep everyone safe and makes sure the railways can be fixed if they’re damaged.
