Public Works Act 1981

Compensation - The award

91: Costs may be deducted from compensation awarded

You could also call this:

“Money you owe can be taken out of your compensation”

If you have to pay costs related to a claim, these costs can be taken away from the compensation you’re supposed to get. This means the amount of money you receive might be less than the original compensation. If the costs you need to pay are more than the compensation you’re meant to get, you’ll have to pay the extra amount instead of receiving any compensation.
