Animal Welfare Act 1999

Advisory committees

55: Purpose

You could also call this:

"This law sets up committees to help animals be treated kindly and with respect."

The purpose of this part of the law is to set up two important committees. You will have a National Animal Welfare Advisory Committee and a National Animal Ethics Advisory Committee. These committees will help make sure animals are treated well.

The National Animal Welfare Advisory Committee will give advice to the Minister about animal welfare. You will get advice on how to treat animals kindly and develop codes of welfare. The committee can also recommend that the Minister make rules about animal welfare standards, using powers given in section 183A.

The National Animal Ethics Advisory Committee will give advice to the Minister and the Director-General about ethical issues. You will get advice on issues like animal welfare in research and teaching, and codes of ethical conduct. The committee can also recommend people to be accredited reviewers, which the Director-General can approve under section 109.
