Animal Welfare Act 1999

Use of animals in research, testing, and teaching - Reviews of code holders and animal ethics committees

109: Accredited reviewers

You could also call this:

"Who can be chosen to review animal welfare independently"

The Director-General can choose someone to do independent reviews under section 105 if that person asks to be chosen. You need to be a fit and proper person to do these reviews, which means you must have the right skills and a good character. The Director-General also wants to make sure you can be impartial and independent when doing reviews.

The Director-General can decide what qualifications or experience you need to have to become an accredited reviewer. They will talk to the National Animal Ethics Advisory Committee before making these decisions and will publish them in the Gazette. This is a way for the Director-General to make sure that only the right people are doing these important reviews.

The Director-General can also choose someone who works for the Ministry to do these reviews without that person asking to be chosen. This person must be qualified to do reviews under section 105. The Director-General wants to make sure that the people doing these reviews are qualified and can do a good job.
