Animal Welfare Act 1999

Provisions relating to administration - Disposal of animals in custody of approved organisations

142: Obligation to maintain register

You could also call this:

"Keep a record of what happens to animals in your care"

If you are part of an approved organisation, you must keep a record of what happens to animals in your care. You need to write down the number and type of animals that are sold, given a new home, put down, or disposed of in some other way under section 141. For each animal, you must include the date you got the animal and the date you disposed of it, as well as what happened to the animal, such as being sold or given a new home.

You must keep these records for at least one year after you got the animal. This means you will have a register that shows what happened to each animal that was in your care. You can find more information about how this works under section 141.

You have to keep these records so that you can keep track of what happens to the animals in your care.
