Advisory committees - National Animal Ethics Advisory Committee

63: Functions

You could also call this:

"The committee's jobs are to help keep animals safe and advise the government on animal welfare."

The National Animal Ethics Advisory Committee has several jobs. You can think of these jobs as helping to make sure animals are treated well. The committee advises the Minister on issues related to animal welfare and ethics in research, testing, and teaching. They also make recommendations to the Minister and the Director-General on various matters, such as the use of non-human hominids and the approval of codes of ethical conduct.

The committee provides advice and information on developing and reviewing codes of ethical conduct. They recommend standards and policies for these codes to the Minister. The committee also helps animal ethics committees by giving them information and advice.

The committee recommends people who they think are suitable to be accredited reviewers, and they consider reports from independent reviews of code holders and animal ethics committees. They make recommendations to the Minister about approving research or testing, as mentioned in section 118(3), and they also make recommendations under section 3(3) and section 85, and section 109.
