Animal Welfare Act 1999

Codes of welfare

76: Amendment or revocation of code of welfare

You could also call this:

"The Minister can change or cancel animal welfare rules to keep animals safe."

The Minister can change or cancel a code of welfare at any time. You can think of a code of welfare like a set of rules to help keep animals safe. The Minister can revoke a whole code or just part of it. The Minister can also make small changes to a code of welfare, as long as those changes do not affect the main purpose of the code.

When the Minister wants to make changes, they must talk to the National Animal Welfare Advisory Committee first. This committee helps advise the government on animal welfare issues. The Minister has to do this before they can publish a notice about the changes. A notice is like an official announcement.

You can learn more about what the Minister has to do when making these changes by looking at the Legislation Act 2019. This act has rules about how the government can make and change laws.
