Animal Welfare Act 1999

Advisory committees - National Animal Welfare Advisory Committee

58: Membership

You could also call this:

"Who is on the team that helps make decisions about animal welfare?"

The National Animal Welfare Advisory Committee has up to 11 members. You can think of it like a team working together to help animals. The team includes a chairperson chosen by the Minister, other members chosen by the Minister, and the chairperson of the National Animal Ethics Advisory Committee.

When the Minister chooses other members, they must think about the skills and knowledge the team needs. The Minister wants the team to know about things like veterinary science, which is the study of animal health, and agricultural science, which is the study of farming. They also want the team to know about animal science, the commercial use of animals, and how to care for companion animals, like pets.

The Minister also wants the team to understand ethical standards, which are like rules for treating animals fairly, and animal welfare advocacy, which means speaking up for animals. They should know about the public interest in animals, environmental and conservation management, and any other areas the Minister thinks are important for the team to know about.
