Animal Welfare Act 1999

Use of animals in research, testing, and teaching - Codes of ethical conduct

92: Time limits

You could also call this:

"How long the Director-General has to decide on a code of ethical conduct"

When you apply for a code of ethical conduct under section 87, the Director-General has 40 working days to decide whether to approve it. The Director-General must decide whether to approve the code with or without changes and give you written notice of the decision. You will get this notice in the mail or it will be given to you directly.

If the 40 working days pass and the Director-General has not made a decision or given you notice, it means the code of ethical conduct is refused. The Director-General is deemed to have refused the code if they do not make a decision or give notice within the time limit.

The Director-General can extend the 40 working day period by another 40 working days if they need more information from you or want to discuss the application with you. This extension happens if the Director-General or the National Animal Ethics Advisory Committee tells you they need more information or want to consult with you within the first 40 working days.
