The New Zealand Fish and Game Council has many jobs. You can think of these jobs as things they must do to help manage sports fish and game. They develop policies for sports fish and game with other councils. They advise the Minister on issues about sports fish and game.

The Council helps with Anglers Notices and game seasons under the Wildlife Act 1953. They prepare and recommend these notices to the Minister for approval. They also advise the Minister and arrange for the notices to be published under the Legislation Act 2019.

The Council participates in developing a research programme for sports fish and game with the Director-General and other parties. They oversee the electoral system for electing members of Fish and Game Councils. They recommend fees for fishing and hunting licences to the Minister.

The Council also recommends fees for game hunting guide licences and sports fishing guide licences. They determine the amount of the levy payable by Fish and Game Councils to the New Zealand Fish and Game Council. This levy is used for administration, redistribution between councils, advocacy, and research.

The Council advocates for the interests of sports fish and game, and habitats. They provide regular reports to Fish and Game Councils and liaise with the New Zealand Conservation Authority. They audit the activities of Fish and Game Councils and recommend fees for game bird habitat stamps.

The Council sells or arranges the sale of game bird habitat stamps and associated products. They perform other sports fish and game functions as required by the Minister. The New Zealand Fish and Game Council has other functions given to it by this Act or other Acts.
